You get to play as a dragon. That's already amazing on its own. Add in a great movement system, where you are encouraged to glide around, and wonderful art/music, and it becomes even better. Its exactly as long as it needs to be to tells its story and display the world, and I appreciate the developers for not dragging it out :p
decided to speedrun
Flying speed is fast
If you flap your wings soon after the previous time, you don't get the full height. It takes like 3/4 second (estimate, perhaps actually time it?) to get to the full height, which is shown by a puff of wind.
It also just adds to your vertical speed for a short time (I think), so if you're falling it doesn't give much height just stops/slightly reverses your fall
Bonk=Hit something, hitting your head doesn't slow you down horizontally, but if you hit a wall you'll have to wait to fall before you can jump again so its usually best to just barely have enough height to land on something
Positions marked are from the base of the tail, though usually its not that precise
I noticed sometime when I came out of a loading screen I had some momentum/was flying
To get the loading screen jump, you need to be holding the jump/flap button when entering the loading screen (and i think a tiny bit after entering that screen, perhaps until it starts saying "press any button to continue")
Just landing and immediately jumping after does not count as walking, but you need to be quick about it
Also just a random note, even when it says "Press any button to continue", it doesn't actually work for another 1/4 second or so
Your height when entering also has effects this is most noticable during the first black knight escape, entering high leads you to be much higher up on the platform and flying, compared to being on a ledge and needing to jump.
It takes 7.6 seconds to recharge 2 fire from 0
13.4 to recharge 4 fire from 0
(so 3 seconds per fire?)
It takes 15 seconds to burn down the branches, when started with minimal fire
It takes 9.6 seconds to burn down the branches, when started with half fire (or slightly over)
It takes 3.2 seconds to burn down the branches, with full fire
so for the first 2, get to like 1.5 flames then breathe, and do the same on the 2nd one
It takes 1 second to be able to breathe again after fully breathing fire
1.3 seconds eating
2.1 seconds fire (not including waiting to reach, with that it's 2.5 on average, also not including red drop time)
2.1 seconds fireball (not including time to reach)
Sometimes on walls, you can jump from them without using a flap
Sometimes you can also get a flap from this, I think its when you're close to the ledge? Something about turning around as well
You can sometimes glitch through when they're being opened, saves a slight bit of time
I think it happens whenr you push a gate from the middle with a lot of speed?
The moment when the gate hits the ground appears to be when lizardfolk movement starts, so making it fall faster by pushing against it at the top is helpful. This can on occasion make it just not fall down and you glitch through the other side, in that case push against the top and it'll start falling again.
Pausing the game pauses everything, doesn't appear to be any glitches/any change between pausing and unpausing so far. Tried during saving red, forced fire, and a few other places
The best method of learning is doing it yourself. Be curious, wonder if there's a faster way of doing stuff. Also, reach out if you have thoughts on this, I'm excited to talk with other ppl who also enjoy this game!
Not everything will be captured in words here, and sometimes a visual example can be better
Each press at the start requires between 0.21 and 0.23 seconds (260<bpm<280)
Walk off the edge, flap your wings and hold to get to the next section
On the leftmost bottom side, you don't need to go all the way, you can jump from [todo: insert picture]
Then jump and avoid landing on the middle platform [diagram continues]
Here you can get away with 3/4ish of a full jump
I think the optimal way is to come in flying, and just hold the whole time. Fall quickly by reducing horizontal to near zero. Use that extra flap on the bottom overhang.
You dont have to go all the way to the left, on the ledge before the bottommost one, you can go 0-1/3 of the way to the left, though if you go all the way to 0 you'll bonk slightly. Be sure to wait before the flap to make it go high enough
A fwend!
Hopefully you enter the room where you can just fly across that long horizontal
More fwends!
Here you can jump to the top right. Green is without bonks, sienna is with some bonks
On entering if you don't have any momentum, jump and immediately flap, to get the right height to land on the platform
Going this way up the ledge is 0.5s faster than going to the further left ledge. You'll need a full flap.
The Quetzlcoautl is difficult, good luck. I think it flies up corresponding to your current height?
You can skip the wilds after the Quetzlcoautl. Just go to the left, and be precise with your jumps.
Dont bonk ur head on the right platform
First flap should be immediately after finishing your turn to the left
Start turning after you pass under where you want to land
What helps me is imagining I'm just trying to get into the corner, without flapping
Once you get up there, you *can* get up to the next platform with just a jump+flap, its trickier than that initial jump. Doesn't need a full flap, but almost a full flap, and also some amount of horizontal positioning. Saves perhaps 0.5 seconds, usually not worth it
The first jumps to the platforms are flap, barely double flap, and then barely double flap to mushroom
The red mushroom to blue mushroom jump *can* be a single flap, just have to flap right as it becomes a full flap
The blue mushroom can get to the platform above it, just have to flap at peak both times and start on right 1/3rd of mushroom. Also don't hold horizontal the whole time.
Jellyfish heads deal no damage, but can be damaged. Tentacles deal damage, but do not take damage
At the deer approach, wait for the double flap, if the jellyfish is out of the way, it saves 0.5 seconds
You can't destroy the 2nd gate until you've moved past the 3rd gate. I destroyed the 3rd but didn't move past, and I couldn't destroy the 2nd. After that move past trigger, you can destroy the 2nd one from either side. No, standing on top of the 2nd is not where that trigger is
You can destroy the 1st gate from the other side, the trigger box isn't really exploitable (or it may just be a trigger line? no good way to tell)
In fact none of the bridges in the game are exploitable
Going into this, sometimes there is a double screen transition. Also sometimes happens when going into goblin village, but more rarely
There doesnt seem to be much of a difference in techniques after Quetzlcoautl, all of them get you through in about the same time.
The odd screen transition from goblin approach to village
Unrelated, I suspect that save/load stuff gets set at particular checkpoints, when you go past a place it saves your current hp/max hp, flaps, and fire.
Fireball, give some time between shots since that makes each one hit twice
3 full fireballs+8 bites, or 2 full fireballs+10 bites
Lure them to the ladder, and then stand on the roof. Bite them twice on the roof, and then jump+flap (so you're slightly above them, or level with them) and bite twice. You can also jump bite and jump+flap bite, but thats a bit more difficult
On the way down, you can jump+flap, get 2 bites in, and get 2 in on the roof
Watch out for the goblin that climbs down the ladder, they can absorb a bite meant for the owlperson, still figuring out how to make them not climb the ladder
You can get 5 bites on the ladder down, jump+flap and bite, and then jump and get 3 bites in
Hmm, can also get 2 bites in at the top
New way: wait to jump until they move down the ladder a bit, so you do actually get above them.
You can technically do this with the only red-arm kill being the one that turns you into an adolescent. However, there's a decent chance you'll die, even with good positioning. Getting at least one extra red-arm is a good idea.
You can go to the platform above and continually bite them
Marked in green is where you can stand, tracked by the base of the tail
The vertical green line shows where stuff is being measured from
This way is about the same difficulty as the other way, slower by a few seconds (a second slower on death, plus you're higher up)
At the start, its about the same time to wait for 1,2,or 3 flaps. Like within tenths of seconds, and not sure which one wins out.
Going on the top vs bottom at the top left part doesn't matter much either, again tenths of seconds.
Taking the lower route (todo: show) saves 1.5s
The gate starts rising whenever you reach the first bit of stone
When the gate closes, you still have a bit of time to open the gate and save red, and still make it in time before the 2nd gate opens enough to get through (lose no time between saving and not saving)
You can skip a platform, by going here. You can make it in 2 on the green (full flap, very difficult), and in 3 in the yellow (2 full, quickly followed by a 3rd).
It's faster (and easier) to use the platform than to wait for 3 flaps to recharge
The hatching starts when you're 3 levels above the egg or closer, and the final moment happens whenever you move (so just keep moving). You just need to get there to trigger initially, can move as far away as you want after.
It's faster (by about 0.5s) to go up after landing in the castle rather than horizontal
It is possible to start the dragon hatching, get the red (todo: figure out a name for it), and and eat all the rats in the castle before needing to start the fire
It doesn't matter how fast you go in, as long as you're past the entrance at 5 seconds, and are moving. There's an invis wall before the block falls
Its 40 seconds total for this section
If you save green lizardfolk, you can jump into the pit where he was standing above, even before the left side of the map would open. Saves a variable amount of time since red lizardfolk needs to kill the ghost before opening the gate
One of the scythe people within the final undead castle, the one in the top right of that castle, can appear 2 levels downwards. Trying to figure out why
Theories disproven by video comparison
I really do think it is random then
That being said, I've had like 4 full runs in a row where it happened. Before it rarely happened. So idk.
The door starts closing and the green dragon starts fighting back whenever you cross this line
If red and green are saved, the gate starts opening earlier by 7 seconds
You have a 3hp leeway without fire (can be missing 3 hp when at bottom black knight fight and still be good)
Slam left, jump and go against the wall and slam to get 2, platforms will start falling. You are theoretically able to get the first falling platform, its very precise, I've only gotten it once total.
After falling, go to the leftmost part of the bottom platform. This will allow you to just stand and bite the black knight, they'll knock you back to the wall. Use your flames (if in any%) before the knight approaches to do more damage. Whenever the ghost knight appears, just use biting for the first two bites, then the third walk towards the ghost and bite. You *can* chose to glide (jump+flap quickly), but it saves almost no time and is risky
Difficult to position for that last part
You can get 3 quick bites in on the left, by getting knocked back up the platform by the ghost knight
There is a slightly faster (estimate 0.5s, haven't timed it), but riskier strat. After falling, go to the right of the black knight, still on that lowest platform. This is risky because the sword flash circle can hit you now, and knock you out of position. If you get lucky, just stand still and bite. Then when the ghost knight appears, stand facing rightwards with your head at the green dragon's wing. That allows you to get those 3 bites in quickly, without moving
You can technically do this with the only 2 red-arm kills, but you need to not get any extra hits up top.
